Meyer Lemons
Meyer Lemons
Firstly, they Meyer is not considered a true lemon. This is because of its hybrid status between a lemon and either an orange or mandarin. The fruit is medium in size and has an orange-yellow colour on the outside, with a thin rind.
Internally, the pulp is a dark yellow and tender with a high juice and sugar content and a mild, low level of acid. This fruit has a distinct flavour that is similar to a sweet lime and has up to ten seeds per fruit.
The smooth and soft rind makes handling, transporting and marketing of the Meyer difficult for commercial growers. Trees tend to have a weeping habit and fruit are borne in terminal clusters on the ends of branches. They do have a tolerance to cold and frost. Pruning is critical to encourage fruit on the insides of trees where they are protected from wind and sunburn.
